Internship and Life in Dublin!

I haven't had a chance to write a post in over 4 months...that does say that I've been busy at least! I decided to move to Dublin and try get an internship to see where I wanted to go in my career next. Managed that! But making a living on top of the internship takes up quite a lot of time, so it's only recently I've had the chance to catch my breath and start looking at making art again.

I'm working in Origin Gallery at the moment, it's a small gallery on Harcourt St., which runs in tandem with an Artist Retreat down in the Kerry countryside. There is a massive variety of work in the gallery, as we spend a lot of our time promoting and fundraising for the retreat in order to keep it running, as well as selling our art!

I really enjoy the variety in the gallery, one minute you could be hanging paintings, the next you will be calling the office in Kerry to check details. We get quite a few passers-by who see the sign for the gallery and pop in to see what we're all about. The focus on supporting emerging artists and helping the smaller names as well as the bigger ones is something that I really appreciate as a graduate. Getting into any exhibition fresh out of college with a rather short C.V. is never going to be easy, and feeling that a gallery is on your side instead of dismissing you is something you really appreciate.

It's pretty hard work to keep on top of all the correspondence and databases, it has certainly made me a much more organised person! When an exhibition or a fundraising event comes together though, it's all worthwhile. You may have been pulling your hair out trying to put it together, but when it all goes off without a hitch there is an immense feeling of satisfaction.

So far, this internship definitely has me looking at curation as an option to look into more, and given me a much clearer sense of the how a gallery functions.

New pieces I have been working on over the last few months. I am working with a much smaller kiln at home, and am trying to find out how to get the most out of it, and incorporate it with fabric and other materials I would work with quite a lot.

Colours!

The shapes are developing in my pieces really nicely, I now have about 8 shapes that I want to use for my degree show. I felt the shapes which were just white and black were a little utilitarian, and had lost some of the playfulness they had in my sketches.














 I experimented with different slips and applications before I found one that worked for me, which gave the piece a smooth block of colour and was quick to apply.

Humanities Collaboration

These are the results of a collaboration with the humanities department in LIT. We each created a design for a set plate on the theme of 'Food' for their catering course restaurant. My design is the nearest one on the lower row, of the group of people talking and eating.

Project 51

I currently have a set of cups I designed on show in the 'Festival of Irish Design' in Project 51, a design shop/gallery in Dublin city centre. The exhibition is really worth checking out, there is a lot of beautiful design on show, from jewellery to woodwork and fashion design, and it's on throughout the month of March.
